cookbook

One of the highlights of my week, is stopping into Cookbook in Echo Park on my way home from the studio. I can't get enough! Everything in there is delicious. They always have yummy seasonal fruits and vegetables. I buy my eggs and bread here and I love their ravioli from Heirloom LA (the sweet corn is my personal heaven). In the summer I like to grab a homemade popsicle and a handful of flowers or herbs. Everything is fresh and always changing. Not to mention the shop is seriously adorable, I instantly feel happy walking in there. And the owner and staff are so friendly. Just when LA feels oh-so-big I find that a trip to Cookbook makes me feel like I live in a real community. And that makes me smile.

ava

Yesterday was Ava's Birthday

She is now SIX years old!
We celebrated by having a little dance party, playing with her favorite toy and she got a special bone and her favorite snack, an apple with peanut butter. Oh! and of course, she got to wear a fancy birthday tiara while napping in her favorite chair.

I realized I haven't really posted a lot of photos of Ava before.
So I am making up for lost time with all of these photos!

My mum got Ava after we put our first dog, Monroe, to sleep right before I moved to Paris. When I came home for Christmas I had a little surprise puppy waiting! She is such an amazing dog. It sometimes seems like she isn't a dog, but a person. She took such good care of my mum and I feel so grateful to now be able to take care of her.
She is my love.

Ava as a puppy - isn't she just about the cutest thing you have ever seen.

This photo always makes me giggle!
She is hilarious!

new work

Over the weekend I made two new sculptures!

Yep.
2 sculptures in 2 days

I was asked to contribute some work for a short film called Crow & Arrow
Allison Schulnick and Gerard Davis (who also stars in the film) contributed some amazing art for the film as well.
I feel very honored to be in the mix with these two.

I thought I would give a little sneak peek into my studio... what it looks like when I am making stuff...
Each piece was made specifically for the shoot, for certain locations and shots.
One is watercolor on paper and the other glass. I have never done a glass piece this big, so I was a little nervous and a lot excited!
I am super happy with how they turned out.

(there are lots of photos so hang with me)

there was an amazing praying mantis just hanging out on the work table where I get my glass

Ava is the best lil' studio pup. She lounged around while I worked, and danced with me during my secret dance party breaks I take when I feel the like I am getting too serious.

These are some photos of the sculptures installed at the shoot (an amazing Neutra house).

The paper one on the left was installed next to an outdoor tepee like structure, that was painted red and black. I love how the copper leaf (bottom shape) reflects the color from the structure and at the same time mirrors the top painted shape, this is what I was hoping would happen, but ya never know....

Autumnal Equinox

The Autumnal Equinox occurs on Friday, September 23rd, at 2:05 am Pacific Daylight Time.  This is one of the most powerful days of the year, when the transiting Sun crosses the Equator, and the days and nights are approximately equal in duration everywhere on Earth.  For those of us who live north of the Equator, we are entering a three-month period (until the Winter Solstice, on December 21st) when the daylight hours decrease an average of about two minutes per day, and the duration of night time exceeds the daylight hours. This is a natural time for going within and seeking communion with our inner being. This supports spiritual and mystical development, contemplation and meditation. For those who live south of the equator, the daylight hours will increase and exceed the night hours during these coming three months. This time may well be used for expressing your energies outward and into the physical world.

At the time of the Autumnal Equinox, the Sun begins a 30 1/3-day transit of the creative, artistic, relationship-oriented sign of Libra. This is a fine time to express your creativity and to enjoy the arts. In general, Libra energies support socializing and doing things in partnerships.  It is also a powerful time for gaining self-understanding through relationships and for seeking balance and harmony in our lives. Because the planet Saturn is in the sign of Libra at the same time, this is a special time for gaining personal mastery through commitments to integrity, functionality and truth in our relationships. Saturn urges us to be grounded and real in our physical world. While transiting the sign of Libra, until October 6th, 2012, Saturn urges us to be grounded, realistic and responsible with our relationships.

Remembering

And you wait. You wait for the one thing
that will change your life,
make it more than it is-
something wonderful, exceptional,
stones awakening, depths opening to you.

In the dusky bookstalls
old books glimmer gold and brown.
You think of lands you journeyed through,
by a woman you never found again.

And suddenly you know: that was enough
You rise and there appears before you
in all its longings and hesitations
the shape of what you lived.

Rainer Maria Rilke

One of my favorite things is when I curl up in my big comfy chair to read Ava comes to lay down at my feet. She is the cutest.
