spencer studio news

I am super excited to share that three Spencer Studio Vintage Photograph Drawings are in the Etsy Holiday Pop-up Shop in SoHo! I am so thrilled (and flattered) to be among such great shops that have been chosen, and with such amazing curators like Waris, Ilana Smithkin, Tavi Gevinson and Martha Stewart.
The shop opened yesterday and will be up until the 8th of December. If you live in New York be sure to check it out. And they have a great line up of workshops! More information here

There are no more vintage photograph drawings in the Spencer Studio shop. But I am taking custom orders. More will arrive Spring 2013.

Last year, I did some work for the lovely Alyson, who contacted me wanting to update the look of her cute blog, Unruly Things. Well, a year in the making and it is finally up!! Head over to check it out. Watercolored ink drop, masking tape, tags for gift guides, and scroll all the way down to the bottom to see an antique drawer pull... all done by yours truly.

and... sorry for the lack of posts. i've been going through some things, taking it moment by moment, day by day. i will be back soon. i promise.

full moon & lunar eclipse // november

Wednesday, November 28th, Gemini, 6:49 am PST

This is a very powerful full moon and a marker for deep change. We are still in a time to make wishes with the help of the moon for what we want in our lives, it is a great time for manifestation. This moon also launches us into the final stretch of preparation before the Winter Solstice on December 21st. This is a big time to let go, anything you have been holding on to, now is the time to let it go and ready yourself for a new phase, it is one of the biggest energetic shifts we will get in our lifetime. Use this time to your advantage, and move into the next phase ready with excitement and an open heart.

Always around full moons, you and others around you may be more emotional than usual. This time also typically brings up issues around communication and feeling like you or someone around you is "not being heard." Be mindful of that and try to have patients and be clear. It's also important that you take any responsibility for your creations on all levels in your life: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Remember, YOU create your life. Also process any unresolved guilt or resentment you may be holding on to. Time to let it go. Use the image of the moon to help you let go of anything you don't need anymore: imagine it every day as it lets go of more and more light, until it is dark, and then fills itself up again with new light.

In some ways, this might be the most difficult week of the year. It sure already has been for me, the last few weeks actually. But this is the time when we are asked to dive deep with in ourselves. So much is shifting with in us, and around us. Really work hard these next few weeks to let go. Challenge yourself to take a leap, take a risk. I promise you you will be rewarded. The bigger the risk, the bigger the reward. I know it is petrifying to do this, but you are being supported. Be courageous!
This is a time of great transformation.

from around

- I love relatively unknown historical art movements... ones that are based on a specific and uncommon skill or surprising material. Tinsel paintings at the American Folk Art Museum.

- Are you smart enough for gifted kindergarten? Find out here. I'm happy to say I am 100% ready, but I think I only did well because the test was visual... if math or spelling were involved, forget it.

- Super interesting, The Island Where People Forget to Die.

- A great little piece about Theosophy. I'm secretly, or not-so-secretly now, interested in theosophy and the occult.

- For my birthday I gifted myself a Past Life reading that was life changing! It was beyond! Anyway, during it I had a suspicion confirmed, that in a past life I was a midwife. So, needless to say I am looking forward to seeing this

- A fascinating study about why children hide by covering their eyes. This part I found most interesting:
In both studies so far, when the children thought they were invisible by virtue of their eyes being covered, they nonetheless agreed that their head and their body were visible. They seemed to be making a distinction between their "self" that was hidden, and their body, which was still visible. Taken together with the fact that it was the concealment of the eyes that seemed to be the crucial factor for feeling hidden, the researchers wondered if their invisibility beliefs were based around the idea that there must be eye contact between two people - a meeting of gazes - for them to see each other (or at least, to see their "selves").
"... it would seem that children apply the principle of joint attention to the self and assume that for somebody to be perceived, experience must be shared and mutually known to be shared, as it is when two pairs of eyes meet," the researchers said.

new moon - solar eclipse // november

solar eclipse

Beaver Moon
Tuesday, November 13th, Scorpio, 2:08pm, PST

I have never known Scorpio energy to be as intense as it has been the last two weeks. Whatever energy I felt on the horizon around the last Full Moon has just taken over and intensified since then. I am a Scorpio and I am most at home in it's energy; the more intense the better for me. I love it's darkness, it calls in the mysteries of life: transformation, death, rebirth, sex, intimacy, union with something greater than ourselves. In a way I feel this time for me has been all about learning that my power lies in transformation; my ability to transform the dark, to embrace loss and see it as a chance to create something new. So, right now I am getting lots of profound awareness and lessons around this, I feel I am being reborn (it is quite painful but also amazing). And so so many people in my life are also facing very intense and profound losses: the loss of a relationship, the loss of a father, the loss of a child, the loss of an idea of what you thought your future would be, the difficulty of breaking addictions... We are all being challenged right now. We all experience loss and pain in our lives, but we all have the power to transform it; to face it, to see the truth, to choose to walk through it, despite the pain and heartache, to claim more of our souls, our power, our purpose. It is important during this intense time to have patients, to empower and feed your soul what it needs to walk through life with fire.

This is one of the most monumental transitional times ever experienced on the planet. Now through 2015 we will be asked to step up and be as fully aware and responsible to our own truth as we can be. Stay grounded and use this energy to transform your life. The following two weeks is especially an important and powerful time for manifestation. It is so very important that we use our energy to only focus on what we want, and desire to create in our life.

It is a perfect time to make your new wishes. And wish wisely. These wishes are very important and hold a lot of weight and power. Mercury is also in retrograde, so be sure to really check in with how you feel about what you are wishing for. You can use the energy of Scorpio and make wishes about new beginnings, in relationships, in things that you are passionate about. This New Moon in Scorpio combined with the Solar Eclipse make is such a powerful time!

Don't forget, your wishes must be hand written on paper. Ten wishes maximum. The most potent and powerful time for wishing is within the first eight hours after the beginning of the New Moon, but within the first 48 will work. Also, be sure to share your wishes with someone you love and trust, having a witness to them will give them more power.

Happy Wishing!

Leap into the Void by Yves Kline
The Other Series (after Man Ray) by Kathy Grove
Room with an Eye by Maurice Tabard
She Never Told Her Love by Henry Peach Robinson

As someone who does not own or use photoshop I appreciate this show at The Met on many levels. I mean, what did people do before photoshop?! This is what!!! Check out all of these amazing photographs. I also have a love and fascination with early spirit photography, some good examples can be seen in the show.
And, I remember seeing the photo above, She Never Told Her Love, years and years ago at The Met. I was walking through a hallway to get to another exhibition, and there it was. I was drawn to it; haunting and beautiful, it has stayed with me all this time.

ninety-two years of woman voting

Not only as a woman, but as a person, I feel so grateful for the right to vote. It should be a right we all have equally. And this election year it seems it is especially important for women to exercise their right to vote! Women have fought so hard to have the right to make our own choices over matters that effect how much we are paid, who we can marry, who has control over our own body... please, let's not go backwards! It is bananas to me that we even have to fight for equality in the first place, but so many women of generations before have spoken up and stepped up and fought for us women today. And I am so grateful for them.
