beware of the dog

I am kind of flipping out over these Richard Deacon paper sculptures.
When I was in school I made some emerald sculptures out of paper that looked like these, they were gold on the inside. These remind me of them, and why I just LOVE paper so much.

FULL MOON

Hunters Moon / Harvest Moon
Monday, October 29th, 12:49 PDT

Wowzers! Ha! That's the only word I can think of to sum up what has been happening all around us and to us since the last New Moon. Things are getting intense! And not just busy and emotional, but profoundly intense. It seems as if everyone is dealing with the Scorpio energy of death and rebirth, both symbolically and literally. Usually we don't have to look far to get a read on what is happening with in us, we just need to look to nature, and we can see so clearly that the energy right now is dark and deep and intense! Lots of hidden and shadowy energy is being kicked up right now: storms, hurricanes, earthquakes, even that the days are growing shorter and darker. So, what can we do to support what wants to come through us?

Now is a great time to be making space in your life. Clear out a closet, give away the old to make way for the new. Clear areas where you feel the energy can't flow naturally. Feel you are preparing your life for how you want to shape your future. You may even need to do some clearing emotionally, take a look at how you treat yourself and your close relationships, and make adjustments so that they become more supportive of your dreams. Get rid of what isn't in service to your highest good. You also want to be making space to generate and feed the natural cycle of life: things (lessons, possessions, money, people) come and go, move in and move out, die and are reborn.

Also, Full Moon's are very intense on your physical body, this one especially. So be sure to keep the energy flowing within through movement. You may also be having a hard time sleeping, it's ok, it's just the moon. But be sure to also make time for activities that YOU enjoy, and have some fun. It will help keep things light and in balance during this time of intensity.

I am a Scorpio, and love it's energy, it is where I feel alive and at home. If things seem too intense for you right now, it probably means that you need this energy more than anyone. Surrender to it, darkness is part of life. Everything in our universe has dark and light. You have to have both. We naturally have both in us. Embrace it, nurture it, ask it questions, dive deeper into it. I promise you, in the deepest darkness of yourself, there is amazing wisdom to be found.

Happy Full Moon!

the week ahead

I hope you had a nice weekend, and are soaking in the energy of the changing seasons.
I got cozy this weekend. I spent the evenings cooking, and getting into the spirit of fall listening to my favorite, Neil Young (my favorite song: Natural Beauty) and burning these. And I made jam (peach rosemary). I am currently obsessed with making jam. I am a little (lot) lonely these fall days and making jam instantly makes me happy. So, needless to say I have been making A LOT of it! I once had a friend tell me she baked her way out of depression. I am counting on jam to heal my heart.

Some other uplifting things...

- on Saturday I went to the preview of Taryn Simon's stunning show, A Living Man Declared Dead and Other Chapters - I-XVII at MOCA. It is beautiful and devastating, fascinating and powerful! I can't recommend it enough. I will be visiting it again to spend more time with everything.

- I am currently back on track and writing my thesis. YAY! Doing lots of research on Illuminated Manuscripts. I have so enjoyed looking around on this site.

- The brilliant Susan Sontag's words of wisdom on love... and it's illustrated!

- I have been spending lots of time in the studio, which makes me so happy. I am working on a new series of paintings: the woods at night. I have started a love affair with the color Caput Mortuum Violet. It has a fascinating history

- I really enjoyed this interview with Elaine Scarry: Does beauty really equal truth?

- And check out these aura portraits - they are dreamy!

book stand

I am super excited about Book Stand! The lovely Claire Cottrell has curated an awesome and unique group of art books, magazines, zines and vintage books. Books, art, the color pink... just when you thought it couldn't get any better, it does! One dollar from every purchase goes towards The Library Foundation of Los Angeles.  So, head on over and discover something to inspire! My picks are above, but I also have my eye on: Bruno Munari: A Flower With Love.

NEW MOON

Hunter's Moon/Harvest Moon
Monday, October 15th, Libra 5:03 am PST

The time for wishing is upon us! You might have felt some intensity in the air lately. We have just come through one of the most challenging full moons of the year, one that might have pulled us in to dark places. And with Saturn shifting into the sign of Scorpio {I couldn't feel more at home right now, since this is my sign} for the next two years, we are all getting some big lessons and feeling the energy of this sign, which teaches us about empowerment, death, rebirth, desire and sex. This is an intense time of transformation!

The New Moon is in the sign of Libra this month, and it is a great time for making new wishes about marriage, partnership, balance, harmony, cooperation and peace. Things you have wanted to bring into your life for a long time can easily be manifested through the boost of this harmonious new moon.

Your wishes must be hand written on paper, and ten wishes maximum are allowed. For best results make your wishes eight hours after the exact time of the new moon, but within the first 48 hours will do just fine.
For some reason this month it feels important while wishing to be present and mindful while writing. Choose your words carefully. Be intentional while writing. Feel the emotions of each wish, imagine them happening. Light a candle, cut some rosemary, create a special space to ground your wishes.

And as always, share your wishes with someone you love and trust, it will give them more power to have a witness.

Happy Wishing!

- check out Dali's amazing and fabulous cookbook!
- Shape Shifter - I can't wait to see the Ken Price show at LACMA
- have you heard about the planet made of diamonds...? Yes... you read that right.
- and... best dinner party ever... this always makes me laugh

have a happy weekend!

a release - or a holding on

yes... yes... i know... this is starting to turn into the Joan Didion fan page... so what if it is?!
I just read this wonderful piece about Didion in the Paris Review by Lucy McKeyon. If you have a little time, read it, it is really great.

Writing, remembering, mothers, loss, grief... my favorite part is this:

But I do know that there is one kind of love that doesn’t require a person to love you back—one where the person might not even know you. And another where you might know someone all your life and then realize, at the end of hers, that you never really did.
Doing what you love can help with this. Doing what you love allows you to remember so well, to feel so closely how you have loved, that you can forget the space between yourself and the words you draw with. Forget the distance between you and everything, everyone, else. Love becomes transmutable. Freud knew this. Writing can be an effective replacement mechanism—and in its solitude, there is antidote for the deepest loneliness.
“It’s people trying to make sense of a fairly universal experience that most people don’t talk about,” Didion would spit back, as if to say, Yes, well, duh. Didion knows her writing provokes a very personal, often emotional, response from readers. Desperate, even. Is remembering, then—is writing—a way to respond to the promising threat of forgetting? A way to figure out what you might actually think about something, without coming to any confining conclusions? A release—or a holding on?

spencer studio - news

I have been eagerly wanting to share this invite I worked on for a dear friends wedding that was in Ojai, CA this past August.
I was so honored when she and her (now) husband asked me and another close friend to collaborate. We made a great team, if I do say so myself! Christopher is an amazing designer and collaborator, and was so inspiring to work with. Together we came up with the concept and feel; we wanted to create something special people would want keep long after the "I-do's", something they could frame or keep out in their home. I did the drawing for the front all with flowers that bloom locally in Ojai during the month of August, and he did the design and layout on the back (which is amazing, images soon to be on my website).

Congrats to the newlyweds!
