NEW MOON

Wolf Moon
Thursday, January 30th, Aquarius, 1:38 pm PST

We entered this new year and this month with a New Moon and we are exiting the month with one as well. If you have been feeling a bit blue these last few weeks (or maybe two months) don't mistake it for something it's not. The Winter is a natural time to slow down and go with in. If you live in LA you need a little reminder that it is actually winter, with all the sunshine and warm temperatures we have been having. This is the time of year it is natural for your body to take more solo time, to go to bed earlier and sleep in later, and to go within. Think of the bear and how it hibernates in the winter, going within to digest the years experience. In it's cave the bear seeks answers while dreaming or hibernating.  Just as the bear withdraws from the outside world during these winter months, we can learn to withdraw from our outer entanglements and seek refuge within. In the silence is where the power of knowing is. It is also a natural time to be with our inner child: old wounds, deep emotions, experiences, imprints... around this might be coming up for you during this time. If this resonates with you take comfort in your knowing that you are in rhythm with the seasons. And it is important to use this energy that is coming up, create with it, write about it... just keep it moving, don't let it get stuck in your body.

The Moon has moved into the sign of Aquarius, it is a great time to revisit your New Moon wishes from the beginning of the year or make new ones. Aquarian energy is about being a visionary, looking far into the future. Use this as you sit down and make your wishes this month. We can access this energy to go up and asses our lives and others around us, and dream big as we look ahead, but it is also really important to ground that Air energy, to bring it back down into our bodies and into the earth. When you are wishing this month it might be a good idea to use the wishing meditation I wrote about at the beginning of the month, you can read about it here. It is a really powerful meditation you can use any time, but it seems like an ideal moment to make use of it.

As always, you get ten wishes maximum and they must be hand written on paper. The best time to wish is within the first 24 hours of the exact time of the New Moon. Within the first 48 is ok too.

Aquarian energy is really intellectual, which is an opposing force that our bodies are feeling right now because of natural draw do go down into the darkness and into the void of Winter. You might be feeling this tension in your body. Make sure you are doing something physical to move this and connect the two energies. Taking a walk or dancing are perfect activities to do right now.
*post New Moon note* if anyone else felt like this was an uncharacteristically strong New Moon you are not alone, in many ways it felt a lot like a Full Moon. Not it's normal gentle quiet New Moon energy, there was lots of confrontation and emotions and deep feelings coming up for people. And a time for lots of strong dreams too!

Happy New Moon Wishing!

the mojave desert - fvf

I am so excited to share a weekend adventure my dear friend Claire and I took last fall. The desert is one of my favorite places on earth, it holds so much meaning and healing for me. I loved having the opportunity to share with her all of my favorite places. See the full post we did on Freunde von Freunden (my favorite!). I am posting some of Claire's beautiful photos here! #shesamazing

Thank you Claire and FvF!

from around

from around...

- these last few weeks I have been in my training to be a grief counselor for kids, it has been so fascinating, and interesting, and thought provoking, and inspiring! I am so excited! I have been reading tons on grief: books, memoirs and articles... anything I can get my hands on. And I have read a few interesting things worth sharing here... the first is a very well written piece called Nobody's Son. The second is Meghan O'Rouke's recent piece for the New Yorker, very thought provoking. I have also just started the amazing little memoir by C.S. Lewis called A Grief Observed
No two people grieve the same way, and I love reading and hearing each person's story. In my opinion, words always fall short, but I love the challenge of trying to find the one's that feel right, and to try to describe something that keeps escaping us. It doesn't want to be pinned down and is always shifting.
Does anyone have a piece of writing that they especially love, are moved by, or perhaps relate to about death and/or grieving?

- writers on writing... The Atlantic has an amazing archive where they have asked writers to write about their favorite-ever passages from books they love. There are some good reads on here!

- totally flipping out and day dreaming about Charlotte Perriand's 1934 beach house finally being realized. When can I move in?!

- two video's I am bonkers for. All I can say about the first is that it is out. of. control! This girl has such style! I only wish I had 1/10 of her moves. The second is just plain hilarious. I am so in love with their extreme enthusiasm and perfected synchronicity.

- so many good shows I can't wait to see: Liz Larner at Regan, Nobu Sekine and Gavin Kenyon at Blum & Poe, this show at Cherry and Martin, a great show at Overduin and Co., and Morgan Fisher at International Art Objects

- and finally... only SIX Moon Calenders left, get 'em while you can.
*update - THREE left

also be sure to check out this project I have been a part of with my dear friends Claire, Hamish and Andi. KITTENS & KALE

FULL MOON

Wolf Moon
Wednesday, January 15th, Cancer, 10:54 pm PST

Let the light of this Full Moon meet the light that rests at the deepest depth of the ocean that is your Soul. Full Moons are amazing mirrors, and that is often why they not only stir up lots of emotions deep within us, but they can also feel difficult and confrontational. Right now this Full Moon is mirroring old patterns as well as shining light on the past to show us how much we have grown. Old feelings may be coming to the surface but only to help us learn the lessons our souls are asking for. People may be triggering us but only to help us evolve. So, have gratitude for them. We are evolving at a faster rate than ever, and that isn't easy.

Because this Full Moon is in the sign of Cancer it is a time of profound intuition and receptivity. During this Winter Moon we should be spending extra time on self-nourishment and self-care. Family, home, our ancestors, our foundation are all arenas that reside within the archetype of Cancer. It is a very personal, intimate, female, deeply sensitive energy, one that flows in us like a river to the very core of who we are as a Soul.

Since the New Moon we have been in the energy of the opposing sign of Capricorn (which is a very masculine (spirit) energy, I don't know how many of you have also noticed how powerful the Sun has felt these past two weeks, that is the Masculine energy we are feeling on our physical bodies). We have been in a time where we are navigating who we are out in the world. The energy of Capricorn is very external - our career, our mission, responsibilities to others, authority, recognition... all of it out in the public world for others to see. This energy is very willful! It has a lot of Warrior energy in it.

The opposition of Cancer - Capricorn calls forth the Mother - Father for all of us, the balance between inner and outer self. The power of this Full Moon may bring up issues with how we were parented, or how we are parenting ourselves, and how we nurture ourselves and others. These feelings may be hard to navigate, especially if they are old wounds. So use the energy of nurturing Cancer to sooth them. Go right into them and ask them what they need to heal. It may be that you need to have a good cry, write a letter and burn it (burning rituals are really good to do right now), take a bath, be near the ocean, make yourself a nourishing meal. Use the energy of Cancer for self healing. This is a really important thing to learn to do, to care for yourself and to heal your own wounds. In so many relationships I see people relying on their partner to heal their wounds, a responsibility that is not theirs to take on (or the opposite, you feeling like you want to heal the others wounds, they have a right to them, and we should not take that from them). When you can identify your own wounds, sit with them, and hold them, and have the wisdom to know that you can heal them on your own... they then become a source of empowerment.

During this Full Moon take time for yourself. Whatever that means to you, stretch yourself a bit to go beyond what you think this means. Sometimes it means saying no to others. Notice how you give as well as how you receive. For some of us it's hard to do nice things for ourself, taking care of others might be more comfortable. Some of us make excuses for why we don't have time to do something good for ourselves. Really listen to your body and for the next two weeks practice giving it what it needs and is asking for. Get in touch with the receptive Female. Be your own Mother.

using

I've been thinking about this a lot...

If you don't use your creative energy it ends up using you

What are you doing with your creativity to help change the condition of your life?

NEW MOON

Old Moon
Wednesday, January 1st, Capricorn, 3:14am PST

I think we are quite lucky to have a New Moon on the 1st of the year. I don't care much for New Years Eve, but there is something really special about New Years Day. Though it is a day like any other, it seems to posses a freshness. I love how quiet it is and it is a wonderful time to go inwards, to be grateful for the past year and all it's blessings, experiences, and lessons. And with the New Moon today  it is an extra powerful time to look into the future and set intentions.

Last night just before midnight I was out on a walk and had an amazing encounter with two huge Owls. They flew through the air swooping down so close to me, as one was right above me it let out a screech that went through every bone of my body. Owls are the ruler of the night and see in the darkness, they can see what others can not, which is the essence of true wisdom. Where others are deceived the Owl knows what is there. As a symbol they are a reminder that there is profound truth that can be found in the darkness, in the unknown. As we sit here on the first day of a new year, looking ahead, let us call upon the energy of the Owl to look into the darkness, into the unknown, and see what is coming our way.

When you are looking into the future and making commitments and setting intentions you have to be grounded, otherwise you will just be spinning, you might feel overwhelmed or confused. If you are ungrounded your desires will remain superficial and unheard. It is also easy to have resistance to setting intentions. Resistance can show up in many forms. The future is so unknown, to all of us, all the time. And it takes trust and work to link and align with the universe, to be in the flow of it, and to hear what it is calling you to do in this life. It is important to ground yourself so you can see/feel/hear into the future and connect with your soul and the truth of your heart.

As a little meditation today spend a moment sitting quietly in nature (you can also do this as a walking meditation). Imagine the soles of your feel opening up so you can breath through them, bringing breath up from the core of the earth through them and into you heart. Connect to the Sun and Moon the same way, bringing the light of the Sun down through your head into your heart, and bringing the energy of the Moon up through your feet to your heart. Connect with the earth below you, and if you know yourself to be a particularly ungrounded person imagine roots growing into the earth from your feet or your sit bone. Breath like this for a while, open yourself up. See if you can with your senses see, feel, or hear into your future this year. See if you can intuit what is coming your way, or what you may be being asked to do in to world. This takes practice, and discipline, and trust. The more you trust what comes to you the more open you will be to receive guidance and messages, the more connected you will feel to the universe and your purpose in this life.

When you feel ready start making your wishes, intentions, goals from this grounded place. We all know the power of wishing, but there is a part missing, as wishing is based in the spirit realm (the masculine). It also needs the energy of the physical, feminine realm of the soul, to make it whole and more powerful. As you formulate each wish see it in front of you and then move it to something in nature that is near you, a rock, a tree, a flower, and gather it's energy. Then move it to something else near by and do the same. Do this a few times, each time gathering the energy and then moving it to something a bit farther away. Then send it to a star, the Sun, the Moon, and then bring it back in front of you. You can feel that it is bigger and has a real presence. Acknowledge it and really feel into the wish, feel what it will be like when it comes true, and then send it out into the universe.

Do this for all ten of your wishes this New Moon. But also don't forget to write them down when you get home. This is an extremely powerful way to wish, something that should be respected, honored, and cherished. Let your wishes come from the truth of your heart and your soul. Add any other elements of ritual you wish: light a candle, burn some sage, give thanks, sing, dance, make an offering to nature of a piece of fruit or a flower, shed some tears, let something go, let out a yell, send someone love... but do it all with reverence and gratitude.

Happy Wishing!

May we all be grateful for the many unknown blessings already on their way.

Wishing you all a magical New Year!

With love!
